An often unknown and underexposed, but very important part of an office chair is the movement mechanism with which the chair is equipped. A (good) movement mechanism ensures that the chair (seat and back) moves with you when you move your body forwards or backwards, so that the back and neck muscles are less stressed. You often see people working on a fixed office chair slumped or bent forward. You can prevent this with an office chair with a good movement mechanism.

There are roughly a few different types of movement mechanisms.

Synchronous

With this type of mechanism, the angle between the seat cushion and the back cushion during movement in a constant ratio of, for example, 1: 2. This means that if the seat tilts back 5 degrees, the back tilts back 10 degrees. So the chair folds open a bit and you get the feeling that you are lying down a bit. These machine heads are always equipped with a weight adjustment knob.

A-Synchronous

With the A-synchronous (non-synchronous) machines, the angle between the seat and the back does not change or hardly during tilting. The fixed angle between seat and back is determined by the manufacturer. Usually these mechanisms are equipped with a weight adjustment knob. Some models of HÅG have no weight adjustment due to the special mechanism.

A-Synchronous with back angle adjustment

Special about this mechanism is that you can adjust the angle between the seat yourself. The chair can then move A-synchronously with this angle you set. Few manufacturers supply this type of mechanism (including RH, BMA)

FREE-FLOAT (ERGO-BALANCE)

This is a type of office chair that is synchronous or A-synchronous mechanism combines with extra free movement of the seat cushion.
